Fun guys, those guys.

I like looking at the screw-top. It’s just so inviting, and I want to screw a top right onto it.

I whipped up some artwork for Drinking With Tim Riggins, a fine...

I whipped up some artwork for Drinking With Tim Riggins, a fine bit of tumbling from Isaac Fitzgerald. In his words:

Here on drinkingwithtimriggins.tumblr.com I will drink while watching said show and share the adventures of our intoxicating, intoxicated hero with you, the two people reading this, who are most likely worried friends and/or family members. I will also explore how we all, each broken in our own way, are reflected in the acts of this young, turbulent alcoholic who happens to play a little football.

Beer Cries. Closed Hearts. Strong Booze.

A quickie for the great dudes over at I Love Charts, who needed...

A quickie for the great dudes over at I Love Charts, who needed a theme refresh on the cusp of their book release. The theme itself is a gentle tweak of Pixel Union’s Synthesis, whose large main column allowed for detailed graphics to be displayed in all their glory. The logo is derived from Jason and Cody’s appreciation of things hand-drawn, of Venn diagrams, and of visual puns—slightly goofy, yes, but fittingly so. Custom type, of course, an effort to give a slightly handmade edge to a fusty slab-serif. But overall: clean and charty, all this.

TEDx wanted a Tumblr theme that they could distribute to all of...

TEDx wanted a Tumblr theme that they could distribute to all of their constituent communities and events. Joe and I happily obilged. Haven’t seen it in the wild, yet, but here are some of the mockups. Index page and single-post page, respectively.

This was a nice little game of balancing the breeziness of the Tumblr platform with the relatively strict brand requirements of TED and the real necessities of programming and publicizing an event. To this end we allowed for lots of flexibility with posts (two sizes are available for all post types), somewhat less flexibility with static pages (and strong prompts, to the TEDxers, to use those pages for programming: schedules, speaker lists, and the like), and absolute rigidity in presenting the most-crucial information about the TEDx event in question.

A pleasantry: in showing the notes on each post, we decided to split off replies and the reblogs-with-commentary from the larger list of mere likes, so as to better highlight any conversations happening around the material.

Responsive layout, too, but you’ll have to take my word for it. Let me know if you see it in action anywhere.

A kind of work-in-progress, an exercise.
Yes, custom letters. Yes, they’re a little goofy. But the verve, the verve. I designed the membership guide for the brilliant folks at the San Francisco Bike Coalition over a year ago and somehow never bothered to include it in this space. We kept the text design simple and tidy, and I illustrated a little pictogram love story across the bottom of the each spread. A young man arrives by ferry on the east side of the city and heads west toward the beach. As he crosses through various neighborhoods, he acquires ice cream, a bouquet of flowers, and a girlfriend. Very fun to make, this.

irondavy:

Pulled an all-nighter with Tag and got this up. Check it out and please tweet/reblog/like (first time I’ve ever uttered that phrase, so ya know I mean it). It’s a great cause.

I mostly just handled the lettering, to be fair. David’s ridiculously fast hands did the rest.

Hand drawn. You like?

Also, click through and help out. I’ve only met Amit once or twice, but rarely have known anyone whose enthusiasm is so catching.

The best was drawing all the little spot illustrations for...

The best was drawing all the little spot illustrations for Mission Mission, which are based on signage scattered around the eponymous San Francisco neighborhood. My colleague David and I, along with our deus ex machina Joe, built this high-toned site for the good fellows at Bygone Bureau. As it went, I handled most of the visual design, but all told it was one of the most rewarding team efforts I have ever been a part of. A lot of high-fives at the end. Do read the charming note the BB editors wrote, will you?

Huh. This was partly a challenge to myself, as I find shoes to be in the same frustrating category as cars and noses: why are they so difficult to draw? Exposure to Andy Warhol’s silly, New Yorky shoe drawings gave me a shot of confidence. Can anyone recommend something similar for cars? For noses?

irondavy:

Umm, umm, umm, I’m barely sure how to write this post. Today is a huge day for me.

My new studio is officially open for business. Sleepover. Sleepover! It has kept me up at night for months now. I’m incredibly proud to have Tag Savage as my partner in this venture. Check out the site for more, but very quickly: we do websites for magazines, writers, content folks.

A main focus will be our blog, which we’re starting off with a bang. Tag discusses his shoes and I announce a new Tumblr theme. My entire heart is in this thing. Check it out, and do let me know what you think.

I can add nothing to this besides my own glee. Do give us a look.

This was a study in applying two different styles to the same...

This was a study in applying two different styles to the same basic subject. That’s right, no printed version will ever be created, amazing. A prelude the recipient blog’s eventual redesign, and a hopefully rad study in bike graphics as modified to a rectangular format. “Mission Mission” is custom lettering, a less brutish riff on the NY Post—like it?

The Asian Art Museum selected this thrillingly crashy for their,...

The Asian Art Museum selected this thrillingly crashy for their, yes, Shanghai exhibition catalogue.
